God of War 2018 review. A breathtaking adventure

So rarely do we get projects we will want to come back to years later. It was like that with Max Payne, GTA 3 or Mass Effect. For me those are first of all games with a gripping story you live through together with the characters. What was great about this game was the scale. Before it I played Far Cry 6, and just so you understand: I just sat here for about fifteen minutes trying to remember what game that even was. The only memory of finishing it is that the distances felt very short and unrealistic, the character moved across the map far too quickly. There was no sense of proportion.

And after finishing God of War I genuinely sit and recall every detail of that adventure. Right to the bottom of my soul: what the father and the son go through, the enormous monsters that take your breath away. The appearance of the serpent alone is worth it.

The story itself showed us an alternative version of the life of the gods. Atreus is actually Loki, and may turn out to be Odin’s son in the next instalment, Ragnarok, but that hardly matters now. It is simply a masterpiece. I will definitely replay it in a few years.

The armour collecting was a bit annoying, I was confused by it for maybe the first third of the game. But I worked that out too.

Even on normal difficulty it was quite hard to beat all the bosses, and not only bosses but ordinary enemies too. Let alone the Valkyries: I only managed to kill the first one after finishing the main story.

And I should not have underestimated the son at the start, he helps a great deal. You play the keyboard like a piano. Lots of different moves. On the whole the combat is a masterpiece as well.

A beautiful world, the goddess’s garden, dragons… wow. This game is top tier, genuinely top tier!

A must play, even for children from nine years old, violence notwithstanding.
